about

“Justice” infuses the sounds of folk and gothic Americana with synthesizers, resulting in an aesthetic that’s simultaneously traditional and futuristic. Call it a new sound with an old soul. Lyrically, it resembles an old-time protest song or spiritual, both relatable in its simplicity and stirring in its emotional depth and political implications. It is an anthem for the latter-day generation of oppressed and powerless, who cry out for justice—if not in this life, then the next.

lyrics

I don’t give a damn about an afterlife
Fade to black, that’s just fine with me
What concerns me is those murderous thieves
Getting off so easily

Whether there’s a God above
That I really cannot say
But there’s got to be some way, somehow
These evil dealings to repay

‘Cause there ain’t no justice in this life
That much one can plainly see
But give us justice in the next
Lord, won’t you hear our plea

Well there ain’t much use in hoping high
Better off to lower your sights
But oh to see those that hold us down
Tumble from their lofty heights

‘Cause they build their castles to the sky
With bricks made by our hands
Our backs endure the growing weight
Of their feudal demands

They snatch the babe from its mother’s breast
And finish off what’s left
They stash their hoards while simple needs
We common are bereft

‘Cause there ain’t no justice in this life
That much one can plainly see
But give us justice in the next
Lord, won’t you hear our plea

When I’m in that eternal rest
No more shall I worry then
But tonight I lie awake in bed
Beset by thoughts of those evil men

For every penny that they stole
For every future they cut short
Lord, reward them with a lash
And make their suffering your sport

‘Cause there ain’t no justice in this life
That much one can plainly see
But give us justice in the next
Lord, won’t you hear our plea
